Risk Purchasing Group FAQ’s

  • What is a risk purchasing group?
A risk purchasing group is a legal entity created by, or on behalf of, a group of businesses with similar risk profiles that unite for the purpose of buying liability insurance. The entity purchases insurance for its members from a commercial insurance carrier. Risk purchasing groups are authorized under the Liability Risk Retention Act of 1986 and are subject to federal and state-specific legislation.
  • How does a risk purchasing group differ from a risk retention group?
Risk retention groups are authorized under the same federal legislation. However, a risk retention group acts as the insurer of the members. It is regulated as an insurer and subject to capital requirements.
  • Do members of ESI share program limits?
No. Each member has their own limits of liability.
  • If another member of the risk purchasing group has large losses, will it affect my client’s rates?
No. Each risk is individually rated based on its exposures, risk management practices and loss history.
